Anything at all, really.

Some of my friends like to forward emails on to me, and they're usually pretty stupid, but this one just blew my mind: SubconsciousTest

I made a little 64x54 logo (same size as the "Moin, Moin!" one). I'll post it here momentarily. Tell me if it should(or can) be bigger, and if you're at all interested. -- cowsarenotevil

There's a good chance that I and others are interested, though this of course depends on what the logo is. :-) -- AdamChlipala

No business men, please! -- MikeNolan

Mike Nolan, what on earth are you talking about? I'm answereing Adam Chipala's add in another forum, so therefore HE is the "business man." ;) Anyway, here it is so far: http://cowsarenotevil.port5.com/hprog.jpg -cowsarenotevil

He was refering to a previous logo submission that featured some business men. Your logo is pretty nice but the text at the top is a bit cut off and maybe if it was a bit more seamless. -- JeffreyKnaggs

Yeah, I know it got cut off... I miscalculated it, and didn't check it. I actually think it looks extremely bad, I'm going to start a new one -- cowsarenotevil

Thoughts about the wiki and the future of HProg

It seems like we going in the right direction. HProg is now like tpu.org was, but with no activity on the website. Few newcomers have already stated that they find the wiki confusing, but how many people looking for a community of programmers have been turned away by the wiki system? Don't get me wrong, I still think wikis are a great idea, but maybe its just not working for us? Also note that most of the activity on the wiki this summer was from well-known users using the IRC channel, and not from visitors. The few we have seen did not come back.

I have thought of no real alternative. I just want to provoke discussion.

-- FrancoisDenisGonthier

I remain a firm believer in the idea that, at least in my vision of what I'd like to see with hprog, web sites should be tools only, not of central importance. This means that it is not a problem for people who just find the web site to be scared off. I'm aiming more for something like we had in the old TPU: a rather small but close-knit group of people who all know each other while being happy to accept anyone new into this circle as long as he is genuinely interested in programming. The wiki remains a cache for advice frequently given on IRC. In this respect, I think it's been rather successful: Think of how many times we've cited wiki page URLs in response to common questions!

I'm happy if one new person a month joins us and starts hanging out in our IrcChannel. We're already close to the size of a large-ish university discussion section in #hprog on a regular basis, and think of the educational wonders that are worked in the corresponding settings! ;-)

I'm pretty much off limits for undertaking hobbyist projects with others now, since now I effectively code fun stuff for a living. However, it would be nice to see a few people working on some project that would make our community a little more solid, a la some examples from TpuHistory. Something like HighSchoolAdvertising would still be nice, but it might be good to have something like I just mentioned going first.

-- AdamChlipala

I have thought about contacting my old teachers in high-school but backed up when I realized that the language would be a problem for them and even more for their students. Anyway, I don't think teachers would be impressed by the handful of active users we have. We would have to expand significantly for real-world publicity to mean anything.

If we are to keep the size of the group small, maybe we should rename ourselves to 'Hobbyist Programmers Club'? Or maybe just remove the word, 'Fellowship' so the name goes with the domain name.

-- FrancoisDenisGonthier

I didn't say that large size is bad. I just said that small size doesn't have to be bad.

-- AdamChlipala

I'll settle with the majority. I'd personnaly like to see more new names on the website and the IRC channel but I'm sure as hell not ready to publicize hprog alone :D

Hopefully somebody else than you will reply and we might see...

Well... I'm waiting... -- FrancoisDenisGonthier

I'm still here. I didn't notice this lower portion. -- cowsarenotevil

Nobody cared anyway. -- FrancoisDenisGonthier

Math Problem

Make a latter stand vertically against a wall. Lets assume the room containing the wall has a magical substance that disappears when the any part of the ladder touches it. Also everything is frictionless. Now let me push the ladder down and allow it slide onto the floor. [i.e. it started off like '|' and ended up like '_'.] A lot of our magical substance will disappear. I want the equation of the boundary that holds the magical substance.

[I hope I've made myself clear.] -- tronman

In other words, where will the ladder leave the wall? Sounds like a homework problem from on of my physics classes that had several people stumped for a while. Just take into consideration the force of gravity, the force of the wall, the force of the floor, the torque from each force, linear momentum, and angular momentum. Toss the equations together and enjoy! -- EricWald

This site is losing traffic at a rapid pace

There needs to be something to attract more viewers to it. Right now (hope this doesn't sound to rude) really doesn't offer all that much that's new, but there are clearly some very smart people here. I'd hate to see this get wasted. Discuss. -- cowsarenotevil

It seems hprog is more about the #hprog IRC channel than the website. -- FD

seems like ages

I like the whole wiki idea but a lot of people are confused using it. I've been off community sites since tpu went down and i believe having both an active website and irc channel is great. Unfortunately, this site isnt half as active as tpu.org was and i doubt that it will ever be. Anyways, it always great really reading the comments of the "ALMIGHTY PSION". LOL

hello!

I'd like to introduce myself, however, I'm starting to get dizzy from sitting in front of this computer (don't ask, it's a recent habbit). I've had some previous experience with VB, mIRC32 (scripting), PHP, Javascript, Ruby, C & C++ and whatever is missing. I was an administrator on the old-new (that is, not the new-new) TPU (Teen Programmers United, a group of which a lot of you were probably members, at some point). I'm 17, male, living in Australia (for those who may ask for my "asl"), no obvious interests at present. I hope this group isn't as idle as it seems. Err, too familiar with the old TPU system, s3b (name's Seb/Sebastian).
