Open Source is the notion of writing software and giving the source code away for a variety of reasons, described by The Open Source Foundation. The Open Source movement split from the Free Software movement around 1998; essentially it is Free Software without the politics.
There is an awful lot of political wrangling that goes on between these groups. Most people other than those who strongly support free software just ignore the whole debate and go back to enjoying their programming.
