Borland released Turbo Pascal 1.0 in late 1983, which started the company's "award winning push into the world of development environments". Borland licensed the Pascal compiler core from Poly Data in Denmark, and added an IDE.

With version 5.5 Turbo Pascal added Object-Oriented Programming (in 1989).
