What are shells?
UNIX shells are popular if you don't have ADSL and you want a good clean UNIX mailbox. Shell accounts are usually free and usually come with webspace and telnet access.
Services Provided
Telnet: Allows you to login using a telnet client
SSH: Allows you to login via secure shell cryptographic client
Mail: POP3 or IMAP, you can read your mail in a terminal using a mail-reader such as pine or mutt
Webspace: Webspace for a page, perhaps domain hosting and CGI
Others: Proxies, games, compilers, irc clients and many more services
