TeX, the Ultimate Typesetting
TeX is a typesetting set of programs and macros under UNIX and Windows. In brief, TeX allows you to create very high quality documents and make your own macro and styles to save time. It takes some time to learn TeX, but its worth it.
Good Points
- Extremely high quality layout and presentation
Availibility to convert to a number of formats, PDF, PostScript, HTML e.t.c.
Easy bibliography, chapter'ing, contents pages and /!\math formulae.
- Some WYSIWIG for TeX are available, e-Doc, LyX and TeXMacs
Free and OpenSource ( available for Win32 and UNIX aswell as Macintosh and others )
Bad Points
- TeX is a very low level type setting language. However, LaTeX is a much higher level set of macros that runs on top of TeX that allows most people to perform most tasks much quicker than with TeX.
- e-Doc requires a confusing amount of packages to run under Win32
Macros on top of TeX
Because TeX is low level and modular a lot of packages are availible on top of it, for phototypesetting chess games, letters and even algorithms very easily. You can even create your own packages after a while and there is a lot of documentation around. LaTeX is one of the most popular packages that is used.
